Frequently Asked Questions

About Pilates

  • Pilates is a mind-body exercise method intended to strengthen, lengthen, and tone muscles for increased flexibility and decreased injury. It was developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century and was eventually embraced by professional dancers and other fitness professionals. Today, Pilates is a popular practice world-wide. The principles of Pilates workouts are: concentration, control, balanced muscle development, centering, whole body movement, rhythm/flow, breath, and precision. Pilates helps individuals find the power of their core-strength, better posture, and more overall body awareness.

  • Pilates was designed to incorporate multiple apparatuses including the Mat, Reformer, Chair, Tower/Cadillac, and Barrel. Mat exercises are the foundation of equipment exercises. They are utilized and built upon during exercises on the equipment. Although we may not always have a specific mat class on our schedule, you will find mat exercises sprinkled through all of our equipment classes. Any class on the mat or with equipment is meant to coexist with the other apparatuses for maximum benefit. The Reformer, Chair, and Tower challenge the body’s strength and stability using weighted springs for resistance. Exercises on the Mat and Barrel utilize body weight to create resistance.

  • Classical (traditional) Pilates refers to the original method and exercise sequence that Joseph Pilates invented. Typically, classical repertoire is practiced in a specific sequence previously known as Contrology. Most of the exercises are practiced the way that Joseph Pilates intended them to be practiced. In a classical class, it’s common that clients will work on a specific routine for multiple sessions at a time. Contemporary Pilates classes provide more accessibility and flexibility for both clients and teachers, and are based on our 21st century-body needs (as the science behind movement has evolved since the 1920s). The focus of contemporary Pilates is more functional, while still honoring the classical Pilates model. Modern exercises have built upon the original repertoire. FORM is a contemporary studio, though we may have teachers on our schedule who prefer to teach in a more classical style. We advise trying all of the teachers to see whose style best suits you! They all bring something different and wonderful to the experience.

  • Joseph Pilates said, “In 10 sessions, you’ll feel the difference, in 20, you'll see the difference; and in 30, you'll have a whole new body.” We find that Pilates helps to tone and re-shape your body from the inside out, and because of that, the results take time. If you are wanting to do Pilates as a regular part of your routine, we recommend starting at 2 classes per week. We find that clients like to practice between 2 and 5 days per week. It is safe to do Pilates daily.

Getting Started

  • We are located towards the north end of the Fairway Shops, in beautiful Ka’anapali (West Maui) to the left of the Whalers General Store. There is plenty of parking available, and a restroom towards the middle of the Fairway Shops (near the ramp/stairway).

  • We recommend taking a private session before entering a group class. However, if that is not an option for you please sign up for a Level 1 Reformer class, which is foundational. Level 2 and Level 3 classes are not intended for first-time clients for safety reasons.

Please refer to our policy page before entering a class for the first time.

  • To book a class, sign up with Mindbody (our booking software). It is possible that you already have a Mindbody account if you take fitness classes at other locations. If so, please use the same email you have registered with to link your account with our studio.

Once you have registered with Mindbody, you are able to see the schedule and sign up for classes.

Please note: all group class bookings are booked by the client via our website and/or the Mindbody app. The Mindbody app is an excellent tool to stay on top of your bookings. You can opt in to notifications and reminders, which we recommend. Clients are responsible for booking (and canceling) their own group class reservations. We do not book group classes in person.

If you have any issues scheduling, please reach out to us via phone or email.

  • Online reservations are required to ensure your spot in class. Our booking window closes 30 minutes before class begins. If you are having issues making a reservation, please call us before your intended class time. We do not have a front desk staff member available in the studio to assist with reservations..

  • Sign up for a Level 1 Reformer class if you are new to Pilates (or book a private session), and sign the waiver. We understand that Pilates can be intimidating the first time. All of our instructors are highly trained to assist you and to help make it a positive experience. If anything does not feel right for you during class, trust your body and always feel free to take a break. Please read our studio policies and avoid large meals right before class for your comfort. Restrooms are available at the Fairway Shops (near the ramp/stairway).

  • Dress in comfortable, form fitting clothes made with stretchy fabrics that cover you when you move, bend, twist, or have your feet up in the air. We recommend wearing compression shorts under any loose-fitted shorts for both women and men. Grip socks are required for client safety and studio cleanliness. They are widely available online or you can purchase them in our studio.

  • Bring grip socks, a small towel if you like to have one handy while exercising, and a water bottle. We have water available to fill your bottles.

We ask that you do not bring food into the studio, and that you refrain from wearing perfumes or strong scents in the studio.

  • It is important to inform teachers of pregnancy for your safety. If you are familiar with Pilates already, Pilates can be a wonderful companion through your pregnancy (with modifications). It is not typically recommended to start a new type of workout during pregnancy. We recommend private training if you are new to Pilates and you have clearance from your doctor to try it. If you regularly practice Pilates, please stick with Level 1 classes unless you have clearance from your instructor for a higher level depending where you are in your pregnancy.

  • Instructors are trained to modify for injuries, however please call us or speak with the instructor. They may decide it’s not safe to do a group class and will recommend a private class depending on your injury. Generally speaking, if you are familiar with Pilates, it shouldn’t be an issue to modify. If you are new and have any serious limitations, we recommend a private session. It is important that those who are recovering from injuries stick with a Level 1 class.

Classes and Scheduling

  • Yes - all of our class packages expire between 30 and 90 days from the date of purchase. All drop-in classes must be used within six months. We do not extend package dates.

  • We do not refund purchases. We can credit your account if there is an issue with your purchase. All retail sales (grip socks and other merchandise) are final. Please contact us via phone or email.

  • Cancellations must be made 24 hours prior to the reservation or you will be charged for the session. Cancellations within 24 hours of your session are considered a “late-cancel” and will either result in a forfeit of your class credit from your specific pricing option, or the full amount of your session will be billed to your account (if no pricing option is present).  If you are a no-show, your class is considered a “late-cancel.” If you cancel before the 24-hour window, it’s considered an “early cancel” and you will not be charged. This policy ensures that others can sign up for classes, as we can only provide space for 6 clients at a time. It also allows us to respect our instructors’ availability for private sessions.

Group classes must be canceled online by the client through either the online scheduler or the Mindbody app by the client. Clients are responsible for making and canceling their group class reservations.

To cancel a private session, please do so online, call or email the studio, or communicate with your instructor directly.

  • Yes! There are two options to pay for another client.

Option 1 - Clients are able to add other family members in their Mindbody account profile. If you plan to share pricing options with other family members, we recommend making one account and adding each person under one profile. Each family member will have to sign the online waiver in the account before entering class.

Option 2: When you pay for a class on the Mindbody website, there is an option to pay for another client when you are checking out.  Please keep in mind that our studio requires that every client signs our liability waiver. Please have the friend or family member you are paying for make their own account to speed up the process of getting them in our system before your class time. Unlike option 1, each client would have their own account in this scenario, rather than share an account.

  • If the class that you want to take is full, you are able to add yourself to the waitlist in our online scheduler or in Mindbody app - as long as you have an active class or package available. When someone cancels their reservation, the first person on the waitlist will automatically be added to the class. Please be aware that it is your responsibility to exit the waitlist if you aren’t committed to coming to class, as the late-cancel fee does apply.

  • You must show up for class no later than 5 minutes after it starts. This is for your safety of a proper warm up. Late arrivals are also distracting for the teacher and other clients. If you are not present 5 minutes into class, you are considered a no-show, and your spot could be given away to another standby client on the waitlist. For the safety and protection of clients and their belongings, the instructor will close the door after class starts. Please be mindful and give yourself time to get to class to avoid losing your space and credit.

  • If a scheduled teacher is unable to make it, he or she will do their best to get coverage. There are no refunds due to a substituted instructor. We do our best to not cancel scheduled classes.

  • If the instructor isn’t able to make class for an unforeseen reason, or if the studio is closed for any reason, you won’t be charged for the class. We do our best to not cancel classes but it can happen on short notice. You will be notified by phone and/or email to ensure your knowledge of it.

  • We do not allow clients to take photos or film during classes. If your instructor is comfortable with filming during a private session, that is up to their discretion.

  • No, we do not offer childcare, as it’s not safe for children to be in the studio during classes. Only those registered for the class can be in the studio.

  • Gift cards can be purchased for any dollar amount via Mindbody.
